AGM & President’s Match

This Saturday is AGM, where we celebrate all things hockey that have occurred over the past year and elect in a new committee. Refer to Joe’s email for details of the positions that are up for grabs. Remember, if there’s a position you’re interested in running for, you need to find someone to nominate you who’s willing to speak on your behalf and someone to second your nomination.

Turn up to Guy’s Bar by 5.00pm in your 1920s black tie attire so that the meeting can start promptly by 5.30pm. After the meeting we’ll head over to Guy’s colonnade for a champagne reception (hopefully at 7.00pm) before heading up to the 29th floor of Guy’s Tower (Robinson Suite) for dinner at ariond 7.30pm. At some point during the night, we’ll make our way over to Belushi’s and party into the early hours.

What better way to recover from your inevitable post-AGM hangover than coming down to HOP on Sunday for the annual President’s Match which sees former GKTHC legends, led this year by Anil Ekanayake, take on the current crop. PB is at 1.00pm, so make sure you get there well before then.

Macadam 2012: We Got Our Trophy Back!

So we were all pretty confident that the whole KCL winning Macadam thing wouldn’t catch on and that the cup would be back in GKT hands this year. But nobody predicted the margin of victory. Traditionally, the Macadam Cup has been a very close affair, with the winning side only having a 1 or 2 event margin. This year, however, GKT smashed KCL 11-6!

From a hockey perspective, the Ladies 1s (predictably) destroyed KCL 1s 5-0. So kudos to them. The Men’s game was much tighter than in previous years. Despite fighting valiantly, GKT succumbed to a 4-2 defeat. After going 3-0 down, GKT staged a mini-comeback in the second half after 2 goals from Nick Chang. However some excellent work from the KCL ‘keeper prevented GKT from scoring an equaliser and KCL grabbed a late 4th goal against the run of play.

The BUCS Conference and the Future of Medical School Sport

BUCS put forward a controversial point of information at this year’s BUCS conference which, if passed next year, will mean that medical schools can no longer compete in BUCS unless they rebrand as their host institution.

If this were to pass, it would be a slippery slope towards loss of autonomy of the medical school and its identity. We at GKT Hockey Club are against any such motion and will be continuing the fight throughout the year.

You can read about the controversial motion on the KCLSU website here.

Army Medical Services Friendly

GKT Hockey Club will be taking on the Army Medical Services on Sunday 15th May. Our men’s team will play, followed by a curry and few drinks.

PB is at 2pm and we are getting the 12pm train from Waterloo to Blackwater via Guildford. Please travel changed, bring a white playing top and a shirt and tie for afterwards.

Old rivalries will be rediscovered as two GKT old boys (Kim and Graeme) feel the wrath of our current crop of elite sportsmen.
